Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS) is an assessment that students learning English language are required to take if enrolled in Texas public schools.
TELPAS assesses the English language proficiency of students who have been identified as English learners (ELs). Assessments are given in four language domains, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing. TELPAS evaluates the progress that each EL makes in becoming proficient in the use of academic English.
The problem students face is while they struggle, they have no way to practice for TELPAS.
Students in grades K-12 who have been identified as English learners (ELs) are required to take TELPAS. This often includes ELs whose parents don’t speak English and may have declined bilingual or English as a Second Language (ESL) program services.
Students are required to take the test until the Language Proficiency Assessment Committee (LPAC) determines the
student’s English language skills have met exit criteria.
This applies to all ELs even those who are not in a bilingual or ESL program. Once a student has met the state’s exit criteria, they will no longer be identified as an EL and will not have to participate in TELPAS.
The problem that schools often see is that students are scoring lower than expected on TELPAS and educators are unable to benchmark students to determine readiness.
TELPAS Pro™ evaluates and drives progress for students to become proficient in the use of academic English.
TELPAS Pro™ uses similar rubrics and metrics as used in the TELPAS to provide both assessment and practice.
The solution is TELPAS Pro™ which provides practice in an environment similar to TELPAS where educators will have data to assist their students in readiness for TELPAS.
