Homework Help vs. Accelerated Learning Support

 The Importance of Intervention

When K-12 students begin to fall behind in school, it’s hard for them to catch up on their studies, let alone stay up to speed. This is also commonly referred to as the snowball effect: when something starts small and builds upon itself, becoming larger and larger over time.

When students are struggling to meet benchmarks and typical homework, intervention is key to getting caught up to speed.  With the help of technology, new companies are able to offer students differentiated and personalized intervention through tutoring.

Learning through Different Techniques

One such method of tutoring is Data-Driven Instruction, which analyzes the areas in which students are struggling and then provides targeted instruction and intervention.  Assessing students through homework doesn’t give insight into where students truly need the most aid. It also doesn’t account for different types of learners.

High-Impact Tutoring is another method by which students are supported with supplemental instruction which is determined through assessment results. Tutors then utilize those results with various response to intervention (RTI) methods.

According to a Linda University School of Medicine article titled Brain-based Techniques for Retention of Information “learning typically involves reading textbooks, attending lectures or doing research in the library or on the internet. While seeing information and then writing it down is important, actually putting new knowledge and skills into practice can be one of the best ways to improve learning.”

High-dosage and high-impact tutoring are dynamic forms of education that go well beyond assignment completion.  Students meet with tutors in small groups that are “tiered” by skill level, continuously reinforcing their education, helping them recall and integrate these lessons into state testing and classroom performance.

Struggles for Emerging Bilinguals

For those trying to gain an education while learning in their non-native language, homework help can seem like a favorable route. However, without personalized intervention, homework help becomes just assignment completion.

To help emerging bilingual students truly understand the concepts that they are learning, English learning support and high-dosage tutoring can provide much-needed aid.  Through these forms of tutoring, students improve their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, empowering them to excel in school, no matter their language background.
